How the Autism Community Shares Knowledge, Information and Assistance
TalkAutism was an award-winning communication platform for professionals and families dealing with autism, serving the community from 2002 to 2008.
At its peak, 12 nonprofit organizations shared a common database of 1. resources (ExpertFind), 2. 120+ distant learning expert presentations (Virtual Speaker), and a unique message board (HelpWanted) that categorized 15,000 inquiries / responses from families, educators, clinicians and researchers - which helped database the community's resource needs referenced for successful research studies and initiatives including AutismCares.
Founded by parents Ron and Sharon Oberleitner, TalkAutism attracted an average of 30,000 visitors a day (before social media!) - and helped demonstrate how web technology can play a pivotal role to support families dealing with autism.
